Invitation Letter

Make Sound Connections!

Monday Night Sonic Sandbox Workshops

Folks,

I’m writing to invite you to join me playing in the sonic sandbox! We’ll improvise together, have fun, learn how to and practice supporting each other in expressing our truest selves while creating intensely emotional music. The doors open on Monday nights at 7:15 and the fun starts at 7:30. The workshop will meet in the Suzuki Piano Studio at 47th & Cedar Ave in West Philly.

I call this workshop “Sonic Sandbox” because it’s about playing with sound the way kids play freely in the sandbox when there’s no adult supervision. It is based on musical games I developed to provide a way for friends of mine  to start improvising together. I’ve since used these techniques with groups of people from many different backgrounds, both musicians and non-musicians to create connection, express ourselves authentically, have fun and make some pretty cool music.

Sonic Sandbox has helped me relax and have fun and it has made me a lot more fulfilled in life. I think it is valuable for everyone who wants to find ways to express themselves freely in a supportive environment. It helps people learn to be better listeners, to pick up on and support the ideas of others and collectively produce beauty and fun. In the process, we learn skills that help us produce better solutions to any problem we’re faced with.

Sonic Sandbox uses music, but the listening and supporting techniques we practice are useful in almost any other aspect of life, work or play. What’s important is that Sonic Sandbox provides an experience that many people have never had before. Once you learn what it’s like, it’s easier to find or create that experience in other aspects of your lives.

I’d love to be able to do this work just because I love it and because I want to be useful. However, I’ve got to rent space, buy equipment and insurance and do marketing. More importantly, I want people to make a practice of it, because it is through practice that the benefits start to accumulate. Therefore, I’m asking people to pay a small amount for each session, in advance, to guarantee yourself a space. If advance payment is too difficult, you are welcome to drop in and pay for a single session at the door, as long as space is available.

Your first session will be for a price you choose (suggested firs session donation: $15).  I only have space for ten people, so the workshops will always be small groups. If there is enough interest, I may be able to offer sessions on other evenings, as well.

If you want to join in the fun, please click here to send me your contact information and to sign up for your first session. I’ll give you more information about the workshop and answer any questions you may have.

Thank you, and I look forward to playing with you in the Sonic Sandbox,

David Ford
